She was fortunate enough to be one of the first patients at the QE Hospital, Birmingham, to be prescribed a revolutionary new antibody treatment to help her combat and live with the disease.
As a result of her day-patient treatment during 2015-16, she was able to continue to lead a relatively full and active life over her remaining years. The treatment and care provided by the hospital team enabled her to eventually pass away with, not because of, leukaemia. This was one her stated goals when first diagnosed with the disease.
